Rescue Boat Launching
Rescue boat launching into the water must be done every month to ensure it´s proper operation in times of emergency.
I was picked to join with Chief Officer and Third Officer to test the rescue boat engine to the water while we in anchorage area since it were due in our maintenance system. It was the 2nd engineer to be exactly in crew list to join but he is busy in engine maintenance, since it´s my first time so agreed.
The Chief Officer prepared all the documents before the test begin by deciding if the sea was calm and no waves, wind directions and other safety factors in Risk Assessment form from the company. The life boat was in Starboard side of the ship, tested the davit crane for proper operation of lowering and recovery. Checked and tested the rescue boat engine to heat up a little bit and if the throttle and propeller are working properly.
Many people don’t focus enough on execution. If you make a commitment to get something done, you need to follow through on that commitment.
We boarded the boat and start lowering slowly and when we hit the water, started the engine and pulled the short string to release the hook. Chief Officer was the one handling the throttle and steering and I was holding the handle for moving ahead or astern and Third Officer in forward part of the boat.
There´s a little swell of the water and current enough to push the boat going to astern. Second task aside from testing the boat the boat to the water was to read the draft of the ship. Chief Officer ordered to ahead so I moved the handle and he increase the throttle since we are near the ship that possible to hit.
In the curve of the ship, he thought that we would hit any second so he immediately released his hand to the steering and throttle handle then embraced himself, Third Officer start to hold tight to the railings and I docked my head because if we hit under the ship, there´s a possibility for injury.
Because I´m the one holding the other handle, I suddenly reverse the engine to counter the impact and immediately hold the throttle and steering handle due to my presence of mind and we avoided the ship. We managed to get far a little bit and started to test the engine and go forward to read the draft mark. I know it´s my first time to experience to rescue boat but I know how it work from observation and I was the one always to test it every week in that container ship. The steering is a little confusing because if you turn to the right (starboard side), the propeller will turn to the left (port side) and vice versa that´s why others will think that will do the same if you move it where you desired like with the hydraulic system.
It was really happened and not just a told story to lift myself that I´m amazing or promote this page.
