Mandatory Search Light at Suez Canal
Every ship who will transit the Suez Canal needs an approved search light especially design for the canal.
Since the ship is in the Red Sea and near the entrance to Suez Canal, either it will start transit and included to the north bound convoy or anchorage and wait for the next schedule. When you have the schedule for the convoy, you need to pick-up the Electrician who would set-up and the one to monitor the search light in the forward area of the ship. Second, the boatman consist of 2-3 person each boat, usually there are 1-2 boat per ship. Along the canal, someone will embark again with the Electrical inspector to check the connection for light.
If you don´t have the search light, your company will rent the search light to the Suez Canal authorities. Recommended lamps would be 2 pieces that are installed and another one for spare, the search light is compulsory and one of the regulations when you transit the canal especially at night. There are lot of small boats and RO-RO crossing the canal in the middle that´s why it is needed.
So before transiting here, you need to check the condition of the socket and the plug for easy set-up when needed. If the socket is 440V, the electrician always with a transformer since most of the search lamp is 220V.
The search lamp has 2 pieces of lamp inside back to back with a reflector mirror in the middle. This big mirror is a parabolic design and cut in the middle vertical. It is cut in the middle to have crossing beam, the left mirror will produce the beam to the right and vice versa. It must have also the option to make it single beam when the two mirrors would touch in the middle and this it will depend to the order of the Suez Pilot.
The primary lamp is facing the 2 mirrors and the spare in the front of the glass. If the primary lamp is busted, just change-over the handle by rotating to the other side and switch the power to the back-up lamp. Some design of the search light has the option to install the air inlet to cool down the heat dissipated inside for longer life for the lamp.
